Stage 1 of the 161 Sussex Street Redevelopment Project involved the refurbishment of the existing operational hotel, the connection to adjacent heritage buildings and the construction of a new 3450sqm event space spanning the Western Distributor Freeway.  The existing hotel with 600 to 700 guests each night was to remain operational and there was to be minimal disruption to the 80,000 vehicles that commute the freeway daily. Extensive engagement with the client and hotel was essential for the duration of the works. The hotel remained a “live “environment. Traffic management of the freeway was essential to delivery and site establishment. Material handling was via three tower cranes, hoists and one existing hotel lift. Services were maintained at all times to the hotel and this included mechanical, electrical supply and chilled water. Temporary works and replacement of end-of-life cooling towers were part of the brief. Fire rating to all building areas including over the freeway was a major design factor. The Convention Centre roof trusses were lifted in sections and assembled on the mezzanine slab, prior to being lifted into place. Considerable time and effort was invested in the final truss design solution to ensure the structure would suit the deck design modifications.  This complicated project has been completed to a high standard and works were completed 10 weeks ahead of schedule. This included additional variation works including additional two levels to the commercial space in the tower and an additional lift, bar and restaurant Fitout.
