Co- locating the primary, community, ambulatory and acute health services onto one campus, the design and construction of the South East Regional Hospital, Bega constituted the largest infrastructure project in the history of the Bega Valley.  During the ECI period, 150 value-engineered items were considered and eventually adopted with significant savings to enable the project to proceed. Extensive consultation with the local community and initiatives to attract and maintain a good working environment in a rural district were maintained throughout the construction period. A major challenge was accessing skilled labour in the Bega region to enable a complex project to be completed to the required standard and timeframe.  The site planning of roads, access and shedding facilities was intensive in the early stages as it was constructed over a large sloping site, with a potential for some access points to be affected by flooding.   Granite floaters were identified by the Geotech survey, which had the potential to delay the in-ground services leading into the building. This delay was mitigated by Brookfield Multiplex by way of implementing three alternate plans which included employing an explosives expert and obtaining approval for blasting. Redesign, removal and explosives were utilised as necessary in order to maintain progress. The external facade is primarily metal cladding with punch windows with extensive landscaping around the perimeter.  The hospital facility comprises emergency facilities, maternity, operating theatres and recovery areas and mental health facilities. Additional scope was added late in the project for a Medical Records Department requiring extensive confined excavation, services alteration and fire-engineered solutions to be completed within the contracted time.   Brookfield Multiplex has delivered a hospital finished to a high standard and was delivered ahead of schedule.
