The development provides a world class office tower, restoration of two heritage buildings and the major upgrade of Wynyard Station’s George Street entrance, public concourse and grand transit hall. 10 Carrington Street forms the project’s centrepiece, with 58,000m2 of PCA Premium grade office space over 27 levels, offering convenient facilities and amenities.
The refurbishment of Shell House and 285 George Street has meant that both heritage properties have been returned to their original use as office buildings, creating 11,000m2 of combined boutique office space.
In line with the light rail and ‘pedestrianisation’ of George Street, the entrance to Wynyard Station from George Street has been completely redeveloped for Sydney’s commuters who use Wynyard Station every day, with the delivery of a grand station entrance, a new, modern and light eastern transit hall and extensive retail space.
A significant part of this project involved working with and around other TfNSW contractors and adjoining builders who were delivering works around the precinct. That this was successfully undertaken is testament to Multiplex’s ability to collaborate and cooperate with a range of organisations and authorities such as those involved in Wynyard Walk, Sydney Light Rail and the Wynyard Station Upgrade team that was responsible for diversion, traffic management, service upgrades, lift replacement works and retail changeovers.
Multiplex overcame many challenges including:
 •    Constructing the new Wynyard Station Transit Hall within Sydney’s busiest transport hub (Wynyard Station, Wynyard Bus Interchange and Sydney Light Rail)
•    Maintaining pedestrian access for commuters through the Brookfield Place site while demolishing multiple buildings spanning, Carrington Street, Wynyard Lane,        George Street and Margaret Street.
•    Providing temporary structures and phasing of structures to maintain the 120,000 daily commuter movements between George Street and Wynyard Station
•    Temporarily suspending a 400 tonne clock tower in mid-air as part of the restoration of Shell House
•    Providing temporary support of the Shell House heritage façade 66m above street level and the transfer of the façade load from street level to the basement, 3 levels below street level while demolishing the internal existing structure that had been affected by concrete cancer
•    Redesigning of the Shell House structure to accommodate the discovery of adverse ground conditions including the complete rephrasing of the basement excavation
•    Removal of four columns within the interface zone supporting Carrington Street to improve pedestrian flow from the unpaid concourse to the Transit Hall. This was achieved by transferring the load of the four columns onto the Brookfield Place permanent structure
•    Maintaining a peak workforce of 1050 workers throughout the COVID19 Pandemic through ingenious planning, flexible working practices, prioritisation of critical works, increased cleaning regimes and the use of technology
•    Three Integrated fit outs, including Brookfield, NAB and Allianz
The Judges were impressed with the sheer complexity of this project and how well all the issues have been resolved, it is a project well worth an award.
