Multiplex spent 12 months developing the project’s design, planning approvals, refining the construction methodology, construction systems, materials, and value engineering.
The New Maitland Hospital is a 7-storey public health facility and includes: lower ground floor for back of house facilities, loading dock and services plant, an 11,000m2 Ground Floor with key clinical departments and retail, a two-level podium level, a rooftop helicopter landing pad, new on-grade car parking facilities, and a 163MW Photovoltaic (PV) solar power system.
Construction involved a large concrete framed structure, installation of complex services, façade systems and included full hospital fit-out including operating theatres and the procurement and installation of major medical equipment. The facility is located in an old brickworks quarry which required significant bulk earthworks, plus the re-use of 35,000m3 of coal chitter left over from the previous brickworks. The development also included an upgrade to the existing roundabout at Chelmsford Drive and Metford Road.
The project displays a strong synergy between the elegant architectural solution and high-quality construction delivery and Multiplex is a worthy recipient of this award.
