The Omnia project at Potts Point consisted of the partial demolition of the old 16-storey Mercure (formerly the Crest) Hotel and then its reconstruction four storeys higher as a mixed-use building, with a Woolworths supermarket at ground level and 132 luxury apartments above. The signature feature of the new building is its hourglass shape. This has been achieved by progressively reducing each floor slab’s length by 180mm over the first 10 levels and then reversing the process from levels 11 to 20. The building is now a landmark in Kings Cross. The apartments all have full-height glazing, with half of them having superb views towards the city and the remainder having Sydney Harbour/Eastern Suburbs views. The builder has achieved a striking, well-finished outcome at a difficult site in the middle of King’s Cross, opposite the busy railway station.
