The conversion of the heritage listed David Jones building into the 5-star QT Newcastle hotel was the final element in the Stage 1 East End revitalization of the Newcastle CBD. The scope included: 104 hotel rooms - ground floor bar, restaurants, commercial kitchens & amenities - mezzanine level back of house kitchens & amenities - roof top bar & restaurant - separate sports bar and lounge. Construction works included the major demolition of the Southern and Eastern walls, hydraulic lowering of 3 existing timber framed floors, a southern extension of 2 rooms per level and an extension above to incorporate rooms and a roof top bar. Stringent heritage requirements included maintaining the lower-level timber floors, joists, bearers and columns & maintenance of the main street facades. To maintain the program, lower level fit out commenced early which required substantial upper-level water proofing. Plus, the site worked 7 days a week. Richard Crookes Constructions used the full extent of its years of experience to successfully complete the works creating the 5 Star QT Newcastle hotel.
