The Canton Beach project is an innovative Community Housing project comprising 30 individual micro apartments, each with their own bathroom and laundry facilities. The project was completed in August 2020 and is exclusively for low-to-moderate income earners, providing a partially furnished safe secure home for those most in need. The judges felt the new homes are modern and inviting with low maintenance features and will provide a safe place to call home for people who are at risk of homelessness in the community. The project delivers an environmentally and financially sustainable residential development with a strong sense of place close to transport and community facilities. The project shows exceptional industry leadership to deliver an affordable housing option for financially vulnerable community members. The site contained challenges through being in a flood zone and therefore needed to be built with the ground floor at approximately 800mm above the natural grade. In addition to the building pad, a number of flood mitigation walls were installed to the site to "mimic" removed structures, thereby ensuring flood events did not adversely affect neighbouring properties. This included a "fill pad" constructed on the adjacent site (also owned by our client) to mimic the building previously situated on that site. This development was designed & constructed to integrate within the surrounding neighbourhood scale, whilst providing a new benchmark in aesthetic form and finish. It seamlessly combines functional and practical accommodation with exceptional build quality and finishes, whilst maintaining financial affordability for the client.
