The The Lemur Forest project combined many different elements and construction disciplines to provide an animal habitat, state of the art playground, water features and an educational environment where children can come into close contact and observe the Zoo’s troop of Lemurs.
The construction works included demolition, rock excavation and reshaping of the site, significant in grounds services, hard and soft landscaping water feature and waterfall, observation outpost, interactive play areas for both children and Lemurs, new structures including night dens for the Lemurs.
The project is located in the heart of Taronga Zoo and was constructed in a public environment, as the Zoo is open seven days a week. This required the team to liaise closely with the Zoo staff in addition to all stakeholders which included Taronga Conservation Society, Capital Works, Infrastructure and Operations Division in order to coordinate the daily activities which included materials delivery and workforce access.
The standard of work was high, environmental risks were managed, and the provision of specialist equipment was coordinated to facilitate a timely completion.
The unique nature of the works was completed under difficult circumstances due to access restrictions, consideration of adjoining facilities and the general public.
