Powerhouse Museums Discovery Centre, Castle Hill was delivered in collaboration with Powerhouse Museum, CreateNSW, NSW Public Works and Lahznimmo Architects. The new state-of-the-art facility delivers greater access to the Powerhouse’s iconic collection of more than 500,000 objects by increasing opportunities for skill-sharing, education, and community programs as well as temporary exhibitions, tours, and events. The expanded facilities also provide more opportunities for research and conservation work on the Powerhouse collection.  The building’s plan runs with the contours. Its cross-section takes advantage of the site’s sloping topography, aligning with the storage buildings to the west and gaining height as the ground slopes to the east. It uses thermal mass and insulation to create a tightly sealed and environmentally sustainable facility.  The development includes new amenities for the storage, care, research, and viewing of the Powerhouse Collection, as well as flexible spaces for education and public programs, workshops, talks, and events.  The world-class building enhances the site’s ability to protect valuable State, heritage, and cultural assets in a secure, environmentally controlled, and sustainable space.  The meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of the formwork, concrete placement, and finish for the Powerhouse Museums Discovery Centre Castle Hill deserves recognition. The commitment, planning, and execution of these elements have resulted in a stunning aesthetic outcome. From precise set-out and positioning of new formwork sheets, through to intricate installation of brass tie cones with a tartan pattern, every detail has been considered. The result is a truly beautiful building, exemplifying excellence in craftsmanship, care, and devotion and a worthy winner.
