The Macarthur Memorial Park comprises extensive Civil Engineering works at Varroville, in the South Western region of Sydney. The works by Ward included clearing the (very large) site of unnecessary trees and shrubs, general site re-shaping, the installation of all inground services and the construction of paved access roads. The road construction proved to be a difficult challenge due to the presence of high plasticity clay and this problem was overcome by the innovative use of Quicklime stabilization. When complete the park will provide 136,000 burial plots to cater for Western Sydney’s growing needs. In addition, the park will provide an attractive open space for recreational use by the local community. The client, Catholic Cemeteries and Crematoria were full of praise for Ward’s cooperative and professional approach to the project and this helped make them the winner of this category of award.
