This entry exemplifies the identification of hazards and appropriate controls for high-risk construction work through thorough planning and consultation. There was a high degree of difficulty in ‘surgically’ removing sections of a group of circular structures safely. Innovative design of bespoke reinforcing cradles were used to lift out large and small segments of the silo, eliminating the need for exclusion zones, drop chutes and the risk of damaging the remaining structure. Fine tolerances in demolition and construction were achieved through trial and error, training, and close supervision of sub-contractors. Access, safe working platforms, and emergency evacuation routes were established early on in the work, providing safety, welfare, and productivity.
