This project was constructed in a live dynamic environment, requiring high level controls, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Controls included safety in design, management of more than one million passengers plus staff, crew, agents, operational staff and the like passing through the construction site without major incident.
Incorporating public safety and traffic management included programming construction work around the 200-plus ships docking at the construction site to minimise the risk to public safety throughout the construction program.
Coordination and constant consultation of a plethora of stakeholders included Port Authority of NSW, customs, security, stevedores, baggage handlers, NSW Border Protection, Cruise Operations (including 21 forklifts) and Sydney Foreshore Authority, RMS, Department of Agriculture, existing tenants, operational restaurants, neighbouring businesses, residents, hotels and bars.
To compound matters, another construction company was working adjacent to Watpac during major events such as Vivid Festival and New Year’s Eve, under state and international jurisdictions.
The judges, having had first-hand experience in working on international ferry terminals, international airports, state border control facilities and Sydney Ferries operations, believe if you ever thought you had tough site conditions to deal with, that the OPT Upgrade Project would be well worth considering before seeking praise for tight sight conditions.
