Brian Seidler, Executive Director of Master Builders NSW, discussed on 2GB recently how the opposition’s $5 billion infrastructure plan could better meet Australia’s housing needs.
With 1.2 million homes planned nationally - and 377,000 in NSW - Seidler emphasised that infrastructure like roads, sewerage, and power is essential to meet these targets.
He also highlighted the construction industry’s skills shortage, pointing to three key solutions:
✅ Faster recognition of overseas workers' qualifications – Current processes are too slow, and skilled migrants could help fill the gap.
✅ Investing in local talent – More training programs are needed to prepare young Australians for careers in construction.
✅ Attracting skilled workers back – Many left during the pandemic and haven’t returned, worsening the labour shortage.
Seidler noted that construction costs have risen by 40% due to material shortages and labour scarcity, with prices likely to increase further. Industrial actions in the commercial sector have also added more pressure to costs.
He emphasised that strategic infrastructure investment is crucial to achieving housing targets and avoiding further delays caused by rising costs and labour challenges.
