David Chandler, the Building Commissioner renowned for his crackdown on substandard construction in New South Wales, will step down from his role in August this year. Commissioner Chandler advised the NSW government that he will not seek a contract extension beyond a noteworthy five-year tenure.

During his time in office, the Chandler successfully overhauled building regulations across the state after being granted expanded powers last year. His department gained broad authority to inspect and order defect retification to housing developments, including both multi-unit apartments and single-family homes. This increased oversight addressed a recent surge in defective buildings.

A spokesperson for the Building Commission NSW confirmed Chandler's upcoming departure. The Department of Customer Service will lead the search for his successor.
