Recently announced as part of the Australian Governments' Economic Recovery Plan, was a $1.2 billion Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements wage subsidy.
Businesses or a group training organisation that engages an Australian Apprentice on or after 5 October 2020 may be eligible for a subsidy. This includes up to 50% of wages paid to an apprentice between 5 October 2020 and 30 September 2021. It has a cap of $7,000 per quarter. The wage subsidy is valued at up to $28,000 per apprentice.
This subsidy will support 100,000 new apprentices across Australia, in all trades and industries. With Victoria out of lockdown and Queensland tourism waking from their forced slumber, 100,000 places won't last long.
As of 9 December 2020, nearly half of these placements have already gone.
The peak intake period for apprenticeship commencements in the building and construction industry is January each year. It is likely that all placements may be filled by mid to late January 2021.
Master Builders Apprenticeship Services encourages members to act now. Don't wait till after Australia Day to secure your new apprentice or you may miss out on an opportunity to assist your business.
